Sedation FAQs

Sedation FAQs

Three ways we help you relax

We offer nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) — fast-acting, breathed through a small nose mask, and cleared from your system almost as soon as it’s turned off; oral sedation — a prescribed pill that takes effect within minutes and keeps you calm for the length of your visit; and for surgical cases, deeper IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Our team is trained, permitted, and certified for sedation, and you’re monitored continuously before, during, and after. We’ll review your health history and medications first, then match the method to your needs.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Will I be unconscious?

Not with conscious sedation — you’ll be deeply relaxed but awake and responsive, and many patients remember little afterward. Deeper unconscious options exist for surgical cases that call for them.

Is sedation safe?

Yes, when administered by trained, certified providers with continuous monitoring — which is exactly how we do it. Tell us about all medical conditions and every medication you take, including painkillers, so we can plan safely.

Does sedation stop pain?

Sedation handles anxiety; local anesthetic handles pain. You get both, working together — which is why sedation visits are typically so comfortable.

Can I drive home afterward?

With nitrous oxide, usually yes — it wears off within minutes. With oral or IV sedation, no: arrange a ride, plan to rest, and avoid driving for 24 hours.

Are there side effects?

Occasionally minor ones: grogginess is most common, and some patients notice a headache, dry mouth, or mild nausea. All typically pass quickly.

What does sedation cost?

It varies by type and procedure length, and it’s billed separately from the dental work. Some insurance plans cover it, especially with surgery. We’ll verify your coverage and give you an exact breakdown before your visit.

Anxiety keeping you away?
