Orthodontics FAQs

Why orthodontics is about more than looks

Crooked and crowded teeth are harder to clean, collect more plaque, and raise your risk of gingivitis and gum disease. A misaligned bite can make chewing and speaking harder and contribute to painful TMJ problems. Straightening your teeth is a health decision that happens to look great.

Dr. Barkhordar completed his dental training at USC and his orthodontic specialty training at Harvard’s School of Dental Medicine — the extra years of education that separate an orthodontically trained dentist from a general one.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

What are my options for straightening my smile?

Three main paths: traditional metal braces (durable and most affordable), porcelain ceramic braces (tooth-colored and discreet), and Invisalign® clear aligners (nearly invisible and removable). Each has real strengths — your consultation will compare them for your exact case.

How long does treatment take?

Anywhere from several months to a couple of years depending on complexity. Most Invisalign cases run 12–36 months; braces are typically 18–24. You’ll get a realistic timeline up front.

What age should a child first be evaluated?

Around age seven, per the American Association of Orthodontists. Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment — it means catching timing-sensitive issues while they’re easy to guide.

Am I too old for orthodontics?

No. Healthy teeth move at any age, and adults are one of the fastest-growing groups in orthodontics. Discreet options make it easier than ever.

How do I keep my new smile after treatment?

Retainers. Teeth try to drift back, so plan on regular retainer wear for about a year, then nightly. We 3D-print custom retainers in-house, so replacements are quick and affordable.

What does orthodontic treatment cost?

It varies by option and complexity — typically a few thousand dollars, with insurance often covering part. We’ll verify your benefits and offer monthly financing so the smile you want fits the budget you have.
